Govt allots Rs 100 cr for Lankan Tamil refugees welfare

The Tamil Nadu Cabinet today announced an allocation of Rs 100 crore to improve the basic amenities in the Sri Lankan Tamil refugee camps in the state and extend some of the Government welfare schemes, including free Colour TVs, to them. Chaired by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, the Cabinet which studied the reports submitted by various ministers, who visited the camps to have a first hand information on the prevailing conditions, said the amount would be utilised to renovate all the 5,982 housing units in the 115 refugee camps in the state, an official release here said. A sum of Rs 37.33 crore would be allocated for renovating all the houses, developing drinking water facilities, building new toilets, besides improving roads, and other sanitary conditions and power facilities .

Taking into consideration the fact that the refugees were dependant on the doles provided by the government for their livelihood, the Cabinet decided to extend the free health insurance scheme for life saving treatment to them and alloted Rs one crore for this purpose. The release said, the Free CTV and the marriage assistance schemes being given to the poor people in the state, would also be extended to the refugees living in the camps, with an allocation of Rs 6.95 crore.
