Tamil refugees in Tamil Nadu will soon be more than contended if the wind fall of concessions announced from various quarters of late, reach them and start working.

If everything works well, for the Tamil refugees’ smile may not be a mile away; the camps may be ‘swarga bhoomi’ for them.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had recently announced a 100 crore package of a slew of concessions to the Tamil refugees living in Tamil Nadu to improve their living conditions, of which 45 crore was released a couple of days before.

He also made the Tamil refugees eligible for Kalaigner health insurance scheme, marriage assistance and government’s ‘free colour TV scheme.”

Out of the allotted fund, works such as building new concrete houses, renovation of existing houses, augmenting drinking water supply, constructing or repairing toilets and drains and repairing roads will be covered.

Free bus passes to the refugees’ school and college going children, improving their sports skills, free tri-wheelers to physically challenged Lankan Tamils, artificial limbs, doles, free education through the handicapped rehabilitation department are other concessions covered in the package. The refugees too would be given driving licenses based on their IDs.

The Chief Minister is also discussing with the Centre to get citizenship rights for those Lankan Tamils who wants to stay behind.

What is more the note carrying the cabinet’s decision avoided using the word “refugee” but referred them as Sri Lankan Tamils living in Tamil Nadu.

A few days before the Vice Chancellor of Madras varsity Dr. V.Thiruvasagam made education free for the refugees children at graduate and post graduate level, which they can pursue on distance mode from their camps.

Now the Deputy High Commission for Sri Lanka in Chennai is planning to introduce mobile consular services to the refugee camps in Tamil Nadu based on their needs and requirements with the consent of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

This is to help the refugees placed in far flung camps and to avoid their taking trips to Chennai for consular services especially for the registration of births and obtaining of travel documents.

When mobile consular services are launched, officials from the mission would visit periodically the various camps and render services at their door steps, as a part of its outreaching programme.

The modalities for such services are being worked out and is likely to be launched soon, the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner in Chennai Vadivel Krishnamoorthy told Asian Tribune.
